Scene: Dagobah – Japanese Maid Cafe
The swamp is quiet, thick with mist. Luke stares at Yoda, puzzled and skeptical.
YODA:
Luminous beings are we… not this crude matter.
LUKE:
(raises an eyebrow)
Wait a minute, Yoda. Are you… are you criticizing beautiful women?
YODA:
(blinks slowly)
Hmm? Beautiful… women?
LUKE:
(pulls a wrinkled photo out of his flight suit)
Check this out. This is my girlfriend back on Tatooine. Her name’s Shayla. She sunbathes by the vapor farm.
(he shows a holographic photo: a tan, curvy woman in a shimmering bikini lounging under twin suns)
That doesn’t look like crude matter to me.
YODA:
(squints, frowns deeply)
Mmm… seductive the flesh is.
(leans closer, taps the photo with a gnarled claw)
But... illusions, all. Skin fades. Curves wrinkle. Suns set.
(leans back, taps his own chest)
Within... the truth. Not what eyes see, but what soul knows.
LUKE:
(half-grinning)
Okay, sure, but—can’t it be both? I mean, luminous and hot?
YODA:
(smiles slightly)
The Force binds all. Even beauty. But cling not to form... or lose your way, you will.
Desire leads to fear. Fear leads to... well, you know.
LUKE:
(groans)
Yeah, yeah. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. You say that every time I bring up Shayla.
YODA:
(chuckles)
Wise, you would be, to date an energy field. Much less drama.
LUKE:
(laughs)
You ever been in a relationship?
YODA:
For 800 years I’ve dodged that particular Dark Side.
